Listen mode, also called hands-free mode, lets learners work through a course by listening and speaking instead of reading and tapping. The course is read aloud, quiz and survey questions can be answered by voice, and the player moves on by itself.
The course author must turn Listen mode on for the course first. See Set up Listen mode in Use AI Tools & Elements.
Turn on Listen mode
Open the course and go to a page.
Click the Listen mode icon (the speaker) in the top toolbar.
Coursebox reads the page aloud. When the narration ends, the course moves on to the next page by itself. Click the icon again to stop.
Answer quiz and survey questions by voice
When Listen mode reaches a quiz or survey:
The question and its answer options are read aloud.
Your microphone opens so you can say your answer. Your browser may ask for permission to use the microphone the first time.
Your answer is saved and the quiz or survey moves to the next question by itself.
After the last question, the quiz is graded and the course moves on to the next chapter.
Listen mode doesn't say whether your answer was right. The quiz moves on straight after you answer, so check your result on the screen when the quiz is finished.
If you retake a quiz and the course doesn't move on after the last question you answered, tap Next.
Keep the screen on
Where your device supports it, the screen stays awake while Listen mode is running, so it doesn't lock part-way through a course.
Listen mode can't keep playing while the phone is locked. When the screen is off, the phone stops the network connection and the microphone in the background, so Listen mode pauses. When you unlock, a notice explains what happened. If your device can't keep the screen awake, the notice suggests setting a longer screen timeout in your phone's display settings.
If the connection drops or a page doesn't load
A page won't load. Listen mode tries again by itself, and again as soon as you unlock the screen or get back online. While it does, you see a Reconnecting… or Couldn't load this page card with a Retry button.
You go offline. Your progress isn't lost. Coursebox keeps your completion and sends it when you're back online.
The audio for a block fails. Listen mode tries it twice more. If it still fails, it skips a content block only while the screen is on and you're online. Otherwise it waits and carries on when you unlock or reconnect.
Quizzes and surveys are never skipped. After three skipped blocks in a row, Listen mode waits instead of carrying on, so a course can't be completed without being heard.
