Assignment Grading Options

This section explains how to assess learner submissions in Coursebox using flexible grading options. You’ll learn how to configure assignments for percentage-based grading or competency-based outcomes, enable AI-assisted feedback, and apply moderation where required—helping you deliver fair, consistent, and standards-aligned assessment across your courses.

View submissions

Open the course page from Courses.
Click Submissions to Review (the tick icon) at the top of the page.
In All Assignments, search for or click the assignment to see its submissions.

You can also review submissions in the course editor. Under each Assignment block's answer box, submissions are listed in Assignments to Review, Reviewed Assignments and Deleted Assignments, with a search by learner name.

Choose how an assignment is graded

Grading is set on each Assignment block. In the course editor, click the gear icon at the top right of the Assignment block to open Marking. For every option, see Add an Assignment.

Who marks it?

AI marks instantly: learners get a grade and AI feedback as soon as they submit.
AI drafts, a facilitator approves: the AI grade stays hidden until a facilitator publishes it. Use this when a person must check AI feedback before learners see it.
A facilitator marks: submissions wait in the grading queue for a person.
Nobody, feedback only: every submission passes, and learners get feedback, not a grade.

Percentage or Satisfactory / Not yet satisfactory

For a Rubric assignment, open What counts as a pass? and set:

Pass mark: the percentage learners need to pass.
Grading scale: Percentage for a numeric score, or Satisfactory / Not yet satisfactory for competency-based assessment, as many RTOs use.

Short-answer questions and Competency checklists are always marked Satisfactory or not: learners pass when their submission, or every criterion, is marked satisfactory.

What language is AI feedback written in?

There is currently no setting that controls the language, spelling or dialect of AI feedback on assignments. You cannot force AI feedback into Australian English (or British English, or US English) — there is no per-assignment option, no per-course option, and no platform-level toggle for it.

Two settings are sometimes mistaken for this, so it is worth being clear about what each one actually does:

Settings → Language (Super Admin) changes the wording of the platform interface — menus, buttons and labels. It does not change what the AI writes in marking feedback. See Language Settings.
The instructions in Course settings → AI tutor steer the AI Tutor chatbot inside a course, and can be told to reply in Australian English. It has no effect on assignment feedback. See How do I set up an AI Tutor chatbot?

If Australian spelling matters for compliance or audit: set Who marks it? to AI drafts, a facilitator approves so a facilitator reviews and edits AI feedback before it is released to the learner. This is the only reliable way to guarantee the wording that reaches a learner. Troubleshooting Grading Issues

Grades are not saving

If a grade you enter is not saving: ensure you click the Submit or Save button after entering the grade (do not just close the window), check your internet connection is stable, and try refreshing the page and re-entering the grade.

A grade appears incorrect or needs to be changed

To re-grade or override a grade: open the submission from Submissions to Review (the tick icon) or from the Assignment block, and update the grade. With AI drafts, a facilitator approves, facilitators can review and change AI feedback before it is released to the learner.

Learner resubmits an assignment

When a learner resubmits, the new submission appears in Submissions to Review. Whether learners can resubmit depends on Submissions per learner in Marking. The previous grade will be retained until you grade the new submission. Review the new submission and grade it as normal - the updated grade will replace the previous one.

Grade is not reflected in the learner's course completion

If grading an assignment does not trigger course completion: check that the course completion criteria are correctly configured in Course Settings (e.g., required pass mark, all assignments must be graded). Completion status may take a few minutes to update after grading.

AI feedback is not appearing

If AI feedback is not generating: open Marking (the gear icon on the Assignment block) and check that Who marks it? is set to AI marks instantly or AI drafts, a facilitator approves. With Nobody, feedback only, turn on AI writes the feedback. For a rubric assignment, check the criteria and weights are filled in.

AI feedback uses the wrong spelling or dialect

This cannot currently be configured — there is no Australian English (or other dialect) setting for AI feedback. Choose AI drafts, a facilitator approves so a facilitator can edit the wording before it is released to the learner. If dialect control is important to your organisation, let the Coursebox team know so it can be logged as a feature request.

Facilitators can't approve AI grades

Check that Who marks it? is set to AI drafts, a facilitator approves. Only the course Owner, Collaborators and Facilitators can moderate. To check someone's course role, click the people icon at the top of the course page and find them on the Users tab.

AI assessor not working / AI assessor stopped grading

If the AI assessor (AI grading) is not working on an assignment, open Marking (the gear icon on the Assignment block) and check that Who marks it? is set to AI marks instantly or AI drafts, a facilitator approves. For a rubric assignment, check the criteria and weights are filled in. If it previously worked and suddenly stopped with no changes, contact support so we can investigate.
